A demo reel is an important personal marketing product.
The arrangement and the presentation of images and sounds can send different messages for different reasons. This is why it's important to get some feedback from an industry professional and to make some effort to consider your goals.
Some actors are looking to attract an agent, while others are trying to gain the attention of a casting director and other actors want demo reels and video samples to connect with and network with their fans and supporters.
In the new digital world, all the old rules of marketing for actors has changed. It has become a much more individual process. Some casting directors are uninterested in the blogs of actors and the web-sites, while others are thrilled to find new talent through social media and other sources.
As film technology continues to evolve, so too does the independent film production system. More and more independent productions are circumnavigating the casting director system and are casting their projects using other means. This is why every actor needs to have a broad strategy for marketing their talents and this is why with every client I include time for consultation, feedback and career counselling.
Not every actor has enough material for an industry standard length demo reel, but not all is lost, because if you do have some material, it is better to have something to show, rather than to have nothing. The majority of agents these days don't take the time to consider representing actors who don't have at least a sample of their work to show.
